A pest on a weed: Bumble bee on a thistle in Tasmania.
Bombus terrestris, or “large earth bumble bee” is native from the northern hemisphere and was accidentally introduced in New Zealand in 1885. It was first recorded in Tasmania in 1992. Here it is foraging on a well-known weed in Tasmania, the Californian thistle.
